For many Abu Simbel’s stunning temples are second only to the Great Pyramid in their magnificence. After early breakfast, you will be accompanied by your Egyptologist guide and drive to the enormous rock-cut temples at Abu Simbel constructed and dedicated to King Ramses II and are an incredible sight to behold. The other rock-cut temple at Abu Simbel is the Temple of Hathor, which is fronted by six massive standing statues. Four of them represent King Ramses II; the other two are of his beloved wife - Queen Nefertari.
In a fit of architectural wisdom, Ramses II had the entire temple carefully angled and oriented so that the sun’s rays would align twice a year on his date of ascension to the throne (in February) and on his birthday (in October) and illuminate the inner sanctum of the temple.
In 1972 the temple was relocated further up from the shoreline of Lake Nasser. For this reason, the sun now strikes a day later than Ramses had initially planned.
